boy oh boy has it been a busy year! it's already august and so much has happened! what happened so far this year, boys and girls?

in march, i went to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is a sinful city, full of debauchery and Europeans.

I got to a convention, where i saw all sorts of people that used to be famous!

I also saw Bruch Vilanche, who is notoriously hard to photograph in the wild. He's just too wily.

In june i bought a new car, which looks like this:

In june, we also didn't play nearly enough hockey, which made us all look like this:

In June, i also went to a wedding!

Everyone got dressed up in their fanciest clothes.

The boys did...

...And the girls did too.

There was good food.

There was good drink.

A hershey kiss factory also blew up near us, but most people were not seriously injured, and the survivors got free chocolate!

The people also danced.

In July it was my Birthday!

Everyone was invited to a delicious barbecue! Yum!

We also saw fireworks! We sat under power lines and didn't even have any long-term health effects. Look how pretty the fireworks are!

Just a couple weeks later, i went to the county fair.

The weather was beautiful.

I saw cars hit each other.

I saw sleepy and dramatically lit sheep.

I saw the goats, and the goats saw me!

I also saw rabbits, but not the kind for touchin'!

In August, i went to a picnic.

People had lots of fun, and a few of them even had so much that they fell down, but nobody seemed to mind.

Later, there was a bonfire. It was also not for touching, just for looking.

Di was there too. She is photogenic in almost any lighting condition. See...

Jimmy was there too. Jimmy is blurry because he was excited about winning a pound of strawberry-flavoured malted milk balls. Good for you, Jimmy!

It looks like my camera and I have been to all kinds of places! I wonder where we'll go next...

yeah, camping is a pretty good way of tricking ourselves into remembering how nice it is to sleep on a comfortable bed, or eat meals with a relative ease of preparation. knowing there's all that to come back to makes it pretty easy to glide through a weekend of charred turkey and cheese sandwiches and shoulder-deep patches of brambles. the experience makes itself worth it, however miserable or incredible it may be.

a recent trip to the half day forest preserve yielded al sorts of lifeforms. the dragonflies, butterflies and cicadas pictured of course were abundant, while there were also the occasional toad, turtle, fish, bird, and human. everything about the cicadas said, "ha ha! we're here to stay!", when what they really meant to say was more like, "see you in 17 years, assholes!"

Not exactly a new picture. Well, maybe it's new to here, but not to those that have followed my other journals.

i miss the summer. not just the favorable weather, but the feeling of it all. somehow, things seem less complicated in that short span of the year. the nights are shorter, but more memorable. i remember summer nights that were heavy enough to wear like a bathrobe. loose and warm. i miss the feeling in my chest of breathing in air so dense that you might as well be laying down in the deep end of the municipal pool taking largemouth bass breaths. that "2 atmospheres" kind of feeling. i miss watching insects the size of marbles collide thoughtlessly with porch lights. vermin love the summer. it's a time of plenty and a time of waste. summer belongs to the insects.

this picture turned out by total accident. the camera focused on the branch while the combination of a street lamp and moisture from the snow made it look like i was shooting the tree against a matte or painted backdrop.

either way, it's still one of my favorite shots from the snowstorm.

I just installed PS CS2 on my computer and have been playing with the features to acquaint myself with it. Although I've never been one to tweak or alter my pictures -- preferring to snap them as I want them -- I'm finding that a lot of my landscapes look better in my eyes when I turn them into B&W and add a diffused glow filter to them. Maybe it's just me. Any comments and feedback you have would be welcome and greatly appreciated.

I really like how this shot turned out. I think the lighting was great, depth of field is nice, and the positioning of the "2005" worked out really well with the wind blowing the tassle giving it a bit of an active look. So here it is, the first post for this community, just so happens that rob beat me to it, what with my problems uploading images, but more on that in a paragraph or two. I originally conceived this idea when wihl set up the original deprave-delight writer's community. Back then, i put it off because i doubted any real interest in it, even initially. But seeing that a few people have willingly accepted my invitations (even when i got the email addresses wrong) let me know that we could have a good thing going on here.

Before i go any further, i'd like to say that if anyone has a friend (of a friend of a friend, etc...) please let them know about the community, as any input here is good input.

Alright, now to the nuts and bolts. As for what you post, anything goes just so long as you snapped the picture. in the interest of keeping things from getting out of hand, please scale down your pics. Try to keep them around 1000 x 800. If you shoot at 5 megs like i do, that's a reduction of about 40% the original.

(perhaps in this area near the picture you can provide a short description of the supplied picture.) this is from a Nekromantix show at the Metro in chicago. it's pretty difficult to get an acceptable shot at a concert with the way the lightning is constantly changing. this photo turning out is simply an exercise in timing, but mostly persistence.
